About Prof. Kristina Gemzell-Danielsson

Kristina Gemzell-Danielsson is Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Head of the Department of Women’s and Children’s Health, Karolinska Institutet (KI), and Senior Consultant at Karolinska University Hospital. She is a member of the Nobel Assembly at KI, which is responsible for the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. She is Director of the WHO Collaborating Centre for Research and Research Training in Human Reproduction at KI. She is Honorary Clinical Professor at the University of Hong Kong, Riga Stradiņš University, and Honorary Fellow of the Faculty of Sexual & Reproductive Healthcare, Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, UK. She is a member of the Population Council’s International Committee for Contraceptive Research, the Royal Academy of Medicine of Belgium, and the Scientific Committee of the Swedish Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology, past President of the European Society of Contraception and Reproductive Health (ESCRH) and the International Federation of Abortion and Contraception Professionals, past Chair of the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) Committee for Human Rights, Refugees, and Violence Against Women, and past member of the International Medical Advisory Panel of the International Planned Parenthood Federation.

Her research is translational (experimental, clinical trials, and implementation; “from bench to bedside to the hands of women”) and includes obstetrics as well as gynecological cancer with a focus on reproductive health (endometrial function, embryo implantation, comprehensive abortion care, emergency contraception and development of new contraceptive technology, and new methods for assisted reproduction) and global health. She is the author of more than 400 scientific publications. In 2012 she was awarded the FIGO Award in Recognition of Women Obstetricians/Gynecologists, and in 2024 she was awarded the Scientific Life Achievement Award from ESCRH and the Egon and Ann Diczfalusy Foundation.
