
About Prof. Anne-Beatrice Kihara
Prof. Kihara is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, University of Nairobi, and Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist. She is President of the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) (2023–2025), President Emeritus of the African Federation of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, and past President of the Kenya Obstetrical and Gynaecological Society.
In her professional discipline of obstetrics and gynecology, Dr. Kihara is seasoned in leadership, teaching, research, clinical proficiency, curricula and program development, student supervision and mentorship, and community development and advocacy. Her leadership journey began with the Kenya Obstetrical and Gynaecological Society, where she participated in legal bill development; professional clinical scope of practice for health care providers; policy formulation/reviews; strategic planning; guideline development and SOP development; and partnerships/networks and collaboration with various donors, development partners, implementers, civil societies, and communities.
She headed the African Federation of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and was instrumental in strategic plan development, improving cohesion of member societies, South-South collaboration, formation of the community of practice in maternal health care, and conducting multicountry projects. She is currently actively engaged in addressing obstetric-based violence (OBV) with Kenyan women parliamentarians, who have successfully launched awareness campaigns, a hotline, and a referral mechanism. She is also an Executive Director affiliated with the International Childbirth Initiative, which commenced in FIGO and addresses OBV.
Prof. Kihara has published over 100 scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals and written two scientific books. Her areas of interest in women’s health include leadership, adolescent and youth health, technology, and advocacy. Her FIGO flagship area is postpartum hemorrhage prevention and management.
